The Process

Our goal is to develop products that unite both beauty and health, which means each formula needs to deliver salon-quality performance while maintaining scalp, skin, and hair health.

We avoid 1,000+ ingredients that are unsafe for the most common skin disorders - acne, dandruff, and eczema.

This includes:

• Most oils, waxes, esters, fatty alcohols, and butters that contain fatty acids with carbon chain length 11 to 24. These fatty acids can feed Malassezia yeast and bacteria linked to skin disorders.
• Ingredients with a 3 or higher on the comedogenicity or irritancy table.
• Ingredients on the National Eczema Association ecz-clusion list.
• Ingredients on the European Union List of Allergens.
• Ingredients on the FDA List of Allergens.
• Ingredients named the "Allergen of the Year" by the American Contact Dermatitis Society
• Essential oils and extracts lacking clinical evidence in use as a therapeutic.

In addition, every ingredients must be ethically sourced and 100% vegan.

Every claim we make is backed by 3rd party lab testing. Below you can find testing we conduct for each product:

Hypoallergenic

A dermatologist-graded Human Repeat Insult Patch Test (HRIPT) found that OCHRE products had 0 instances of irritation after 110 participants (59 with sensitive skin) were exposed to our shampoo, conditioner, and hair cream over 6 weeks.

Noncomedogenic

A dermatologist-graded assessment found a reduction in the number of scalp comedones after 23 participants used Essential Shampoo and Essential Conditioner over 2 weeks and 27 participants used Everything Haircream over 2 weeks.

Microbiome-balancing

A third-party lab found that OCHRE products maintain skin microbiome richness, diversity, and growth of commensal scalp microbes after 23 participants used Essential Shampoo and Essential Conditioner over 2 weeks and 27 participants used Everything Haircream over 2 weeks.
